FINNMARK 2020 DAY Eight.

What a full-hearted welcome by the brothers here. We saw the East going “Polatrlys” calling-in at 16:45 and turn round in the “fjord”. Have slept well upstairs and the weather 13 gr. With a sparkling sun.  We, son and father, have walked this site out to have a look at Kim Andrea’s “Maya”. The Sea is so clear.  Walk to the other end of the “village” to the church. Then the “upper road” home for some lunch. It is a bit late (and blowing) for going fishing, and Oddmund with Kim Andrea’s scheduled job at sea is to check King Krab tejns.

   Planned activities are trips inland (Åke’s hut and Meeham Harbour/Sletnæs lighthouse). Relaxe and admire Kjøllefjords combination of all nature’s finest aspects.

   Last night, I learnt, that poor fishermen in old time could row from here in open Sea all the way some 200 km down to Lofoten. Tough times. In this house, Åke Ivar’s, birthplace, was housed parents with six children.

   Half a Century ago children used the harbour platforms to play all day (swim, jump etc.). The Church bells would chime at 20 hrs., and children should go home for the day. The Lensman (police) would patrol with his dog to control appliance. All this has gone.

   Today many elders are housed in hospital, elders home and in elders houses.

2020 FINNMARK. Day seventh (Monday morning)

 Palmok is an OK place. Rather primitive in Contact, but being very far out, what else can be expected? Many things are communicated only by signals. As an example, the only instruction in the double hut is a sign: No Smoking.

   We are early risers after good sleeps. No noise overnight has been disturbing us. It is really the  one end of the long Highway 6 from Portugal.

   Another reason for sleeping well can be, that rush is over. A few hours’ drive, and we will be with Åke-Ivar and brother Oddmund in the very charming small fishing village of Kjøllefjord., a long Fjord open to the West.

   I have slept in Åke-Ivar’s home twice before, so left now is just to renew bonds. Laying in the warm bed early this morning, my thinking was drifting wide? Hospitality met with 60 years ago in Samoa (the tropics) as a young person and now here in

   The rich Norway (the Artic) is like day and night in comparison! Have we inhabitants of our common Globe changed so much our are we subject to changes in our humanity?

   Of course, if you grow-up in tribal societies, you become members thereof. If you grow up as nomads, which is or have been more or less the case her in Lapland, you may tend to be less SOCIAL, less Communicating?

Program of the day is:

   Leave at 10-11 o’clock for a stop in Tana to look at shops etc. Then the say two hrs. drive up to Kjøllefjord. We are now out of “the woods”, so the mountains will be bare, and reins, moose and predators might be seen?

    Temp. was yesterday unusual high for September up here (17 gr,), so we have been praised. Only two minutes of light rain, so the empty E 6 Was as our own racetrack! All the time, we moved in long curves up and down, in and out, with breathtaking views to lakes, coasts, mountains tops etc. Add to this, that colors are so picture full and forceful.

   During the last Pasvik stop at Svanvik, we walked their botanical garden, which reveals how rich, the very short artic summer can be. Vegetables are going to big dimensions.

   Our hosts here, Astrid & Andreas, provided us with frozen   “helleflynder”, and with fine, light yellow potatoes dug up in their garden. Delicious.

   We went some 100 mtrs. By car to the Museum (closed) and to the river. Christian walked back to keep his fitness in order.

   As in Australia and other places, I am a bit anxious as to re-union, after here 9 years. I guess needless.

FINNMARK 2020. Day SIX

Sun was up, and we packed our gear and took it to the car ahead of a delicious breakfast at 09:00. Having lived in such marvelous “Wild Life” designed surroundings out in the woods, haVSbeen medicine for the hectic travel up to now.

   Christian got the idea to save a 100 Km by cutting through to Kirkenes across Finland. Only Corona complications worried us.

   Never mind, we went to the Finland border and explained our only TRANSIT needs, and two competent patrol men let us pass. We then had three easy hours on the most nice road without traffic through to Kirkenes. It was so fantastic to cruise over the plains. The lonely official at the other end just waved us through!

   We are now via a bad road down here at Vaggamatem 100 km down in the Pasvik Valley. It’s time for a “morfar”. Noatun rendezvous has to wait for tomorrow morning. No Sauna either, but may a dip in the river before going to bed?  

   Today’s program was the toughest. We have hardly relaxed enough from a tough start, and the mileage and unknown terrain was worrying us/me also.

   Christian is in touch with Andreas at the next stop, near Tana. After that our Main Stop. Åke-Ivar’s cosy Kjøllefjord home. The long road from Honningsvrå back to Tromsæ, that we see  as “a piece of cake”.

   Rain has not hit us yet, and today up at the plains temperature was 18 gr. Water is seen everywhere as lakes and/or running fast downhill.  Colours are a lot of red and yellow already, and sceneries in general breathtaking.

   Very few birds or animals have been spotted so far. 

    Our rather optimistic program is only possible due all the electronic devices, which can be consulted and used to facilitate successful end results. Wonder how travel will develop in a further life span?

   Have now slept and woke up to sunshine. Around 08:00 hrs, we will drive the 10 km down to NOATUN. Walk out to the borderpost and look over towards the BIG country, Russia. Going North then jsut turn-in at Svanvik to study how well all types of plants and vegatables can grow by plenty of long light in a short summer. More to that later from here 70 gr. North.

Day FOUR. Kautokeino

The overnight trip on HURTIGRUTEN’s “MIDNIGHT SUN” was so elegant. Having left Tromsø at 18:00, we enjoyed the slow sailing North. , Had a small salad dinner and went to bed early for wake-up at 05:00 to go ashore in Hammerfest, were the car was handed back to us at the Quaye!

We are now lodged in a fine and warm hut at Kautokeino having driven two beautiful stretches in full Lapland sun up along the ever changing Alta river with a short breakfast stop in Alta. Christian really found the Juhl Silversmith visit high up on the river’s southern bank breathtaking, like we have done before. Took a sundowner just outside Maris hut.. A fine, sunny day here very north.

Day Five. Going Karasjok.

Yesterday was a remarkable autumn day up here North. So long and pleasant. From our table in a comfortable hut room, we watched the “midnight sun” around 21:00 just skimming the valley top far over beyond the Alta river settling quietly.

Dinner was Reindeer beef. Very tasteful.

We are now already “seasoned travelers”. Maybe also relaxed, having survived the strange HURTIGRUTE night and the pertaining drive up/in here? Traveling is much more hard work, than I recalled, but charming. In few minutes I shall be the driver of the first stretch back say 50 km of the Highway 45 up to the right hand Karasjok road. Years ago, Hanne and I were the only passengers in a midnight bus driving the stretch over the tundra in pitch dark.

-Cont. Karashok. The passage at daytime across the “plains” to her was marvelous. Nature really reveals all about “who is in control”? Height of vegetation, colors, growth etc. are all determined by the richness of soil or lack of same, the slope of ground, the waterfalls and run-off etc.

What a wonderful drive. We made stops, whenever we felt! Found easily “Engholm Husky”. Checked in to a very “rough” settler’s hut, and having unpacked and after some food, we proceeded to have a glance at the Sami City KARACHOK, 6 km further on, whilst the wood stove went going. Not much to see. A cup of coffee and a small “morfar” up to excellent dinner at 19:00 hrs.

Christian has checked for programs at the next two stopovers on our way up to the real goal of this encounter. The STAY with Kjøllefjord families/friends. So far incredibly good. The weather is with us!

TROMSØ Library

DAY one – 01 September 2020

A SAS flight or two small ones took us up here to TROMSØ, Finnmark, Norway, via Oslo.

Yesterday was horrible. Almost no sleep all night until Christian in a Taxi picked me up around 03:15.

Passed through an almost empty and sleeping Kastrup Airport (CORANA). Was told by someone, that our joint two pieces of luggage will be sent on to TromsØ. Well seated in the flight there, the crew asked me with my hand luggage  to disembark and go back to the “Check-in”, as something was not correct with my luggage. I had lost Christian in the process. 

The Check-in now was left unattended. We had only been say 20 passengers.

My flight took off, but suddenly Christian turned up. We were re-united. Thank god!

Two hours later, we landed well here WITH the suitcases!

Having chosen to let two TROMSØ BnB nights a start. feels Okay.

It is a Capital of the region as its own up here so far North.

Hours later, we had got a nice Suzuki  car, dropped luggage at B&B, which would be cleaned ready for us at 17:00 hours.

Went shopping and found tasty “Rød¸fisk” for dinner prepared back again by Christian.

Went to bed quite early. Well used!

— cont. Took a small sightseeing trip to the North and due heavy traffic. Christian continued all the way round to the Airport and then in the tunnel back. Went to bed on a small glass of COGNAC. Tasted like Heaven.

Today was set aside for double Museum exercises. Uni. M. in the morning, and Polar M. after lunch. In between purchase of whale meat Roald Amundsen and his encounters. Quite a nice museum. We are now home for two “morfars” (one each).

19:15 hrs. Christian is doing all the work. The black whale meat is well under its way to land as de Luxe dinner.

   Since visiting Kerstin on Sørøya in 2004, Hanne and I have always been captivated by “Lapland” ie. FINNMARK, Northern Norway. See our travel-diaries to there 2004, -06, -09, and 2011.

   WHAT would be better now, where alone, than to ask my son to travel “an adventure trip” that overall would be “All the Best”? The Ide’a just seems to be BINGO! More than that!

   Right now, after a meeting last week, Christian is honing a chosen route to get all logistics in place. I find below that my son is simply good at it.

   From the fact that I fumbled around with suggestions, that financially should make our Adventure modest, he makes things unfold elegantly and at the same time “form meaning”.

Of course, we must live “as we are in the first class”. Our friends in Kjøllefjord (from 2004 trip to Kerstin) are advised, as the visit with them must be the highlight of the trip. I promised them to bake pastry and make fishballs, as they existed in Skagen in the old days at Signe and Thomas’s.

   Starting in  TROMSØ  will give us all the best about Norway’s last of major cities on the west coast, and it’s really high to the north (maybe 2.000 km north of Oslo?). We take one of Hurtigruten’s beautiful ship (MS Midnight Sun) overnight in a cabin up to  Hammerfest, where we put a in Tromsø rented car ashore  (VW Golf)  and  start  towards Alta for a beautiful drive up the Alta river, drive left on from  Kautokeino, through the kingdom of the patches (Engholm Husky), Samer Parlement in  Karasjok) up to Kirkenes  and 100 km down the bottom of the Pasvik Valley towards Russia. Pasvik Camping might offer us a cold swim in the river opposite Russia after a sauna? Then it is north again and via Kirkenes and Tana further up towards Kjøllefjord with two, three experiential days there, with friends from2004. Brothers Oddmund and Åke Ivar w. families.

   Then, with the car in the cargo to Honningsvrå, three hours in the middle of the night (MSRichard With, named after the founder of the route). I wonder if we’re going to visit one of the two big SPA’s up on the top deck for the few hours this trip takes? Then it’s a shore one early morning and then quite a long road trip via Alta “home to Tromsø” for handing over our car at Airport.

    A late-night flight takes us via Oslo home for Sunday. Home to the others who so hopefully one day can experience the trip too. First, though, via reading of our “Diary.”

PS:

   It has proved expedite to distribute roles. When Christian’s got everything made up, we are ready. The trip itself becomes just “a piece of cake”. Luxury and not expense-wise unreasonable. We’re just good!

   The first two weeks of September are ahead of autumn really setting in, but with beautiful birch wood colors. The mosquitoes are probably losing energy (disappearing). There will still be midnight sun and long days. We both expect car driving to be OK, also, as there are not many people living in Finnmark.

   The cruising through empty wilderness will have many natural sights waiting us.

Elk, Reindeer (by the thousands), Brown Bears, Polar foxes, Eagles, Sea Gulls, Owls).

   We plan to eat a lot of fish (shark, tuna, trout, salmon, cod, king crab, oysters, crabs etc., etc.).

I can’t wait to leave as a son and a father!

DAGBOG for 2020 rejse i Finnmark, Norge, med Christian.

Tromsø til Tromsø. 1.  –  12. September 2020

   Hanne  og jeg har siden besøg hos Kerstin på Sørøya i 2004 altid været betaget af ”Lapland” dvs. FINNMARK, Nord Norge. Se vores rejsedagbøger til der 2004, -06, -09, og 2011.

   HVAD ville være bedre nu, hvor alene, at end at bede sin søn om, at rejse en oplevelsesrejse, der samlet ville være ”Alt det Bedste”?

Søreme, om det ikke bare ser ud til at kunne være BINGO! Mere end det!

   Lige nu finpudser Christian, efter et møde i sidste uge herom, en valgt rute mhp. at få al logistik til at falde på plads. Jeg oplever herunder, at min søn bare er god til det.

   Fra, at jeg famlede rundt med forslag, der finansielt skulle gøre vores Adventure beskedent, får han ting til at folde sig elegant ud og samtidigt ”danne mening”. Vi skal selvfølgelig leve som på 1’ste klasse. Vores venner i Kjøllefjord (fra 2004 tur til Kerstin) er adviseret, da besøget hos dem skal være turens Højdepunkt. Jeg har lovet dem at bage wienerbrød og lave fiskeboller, som de fandtes i Skagen i gamle dage hos Signe og Thomas.

  Start i TROMSØ vil give os alt det bedste ved Norges sidste af større byer på Vestkysten, her højt mod nord. Polarmuseum mm. Vi tager så sent om eftermiddagen en af Hurtigrutens flotte skib (MS Midnatssol) natten over i kahyt frem til Hammerfest, hvorfra vi sætter en i Tromsø lejet bil i land (VW Golf) og starter mod Alta for en smuk køretur op langs Alta elv, kører venstre om fra Kautokeino, gennem lappernes rige (Engholm Husky), Samerting i Karasjok) frem til Kirkenes og 100 km ned i bunden af Pasvikdalen ind imod Rusland (Pasvik Camping). Så er det nord på igen og via Kirkenes og Tana  op imod Kjøllefjord med to, tre oplevelsesrige dage der, hos venner fra 2004. brødrene Oddmund og Åke Ivar m familier.

   Derefter overfart med bil i lasten til Honningsvrå tre timer midt om natten (MS Richard With, opkaldt efter rutens grundlægger). Mon ikke vi skal i en af de to store SPA’er oppe agter på øverst dæk, de få timer den tur tager? Så er det fra borde en tidlig morgen og så en ganske lang biltur via Alta ”hjem til Tromsø” for aflevering af bil i Lufthavn. Et sent aftenfly bringer os via Oslo hjem til søndag. Hjem til de andre, som så forhåbentlig en dag kan opleve turen også? Først dog via læsning af vores ”Dagbog.”

   SÅDAN !

PS:

   Det har vist sig ekspedit at fordele roller. Når Christian har ”fået alt i hus”, er vi klar.

   Selve turen bliver blot ”a piece of cake”. Luksus og ikke udgiftsmæssigt urimelig. Vi ER bare gode!

   De to første uger af september er førend efterår rigtig sætter ind, men med flotte birketræs farver. Myggene er nok afdæmpet. Der er stadigvæk ganske megen midnatssol og lange dage.

Bilkørsel forventer vi begge bliver OK, da der ikke bor mange i Finnmark. Vi skal spise en masse fisk (haj, tun, ørred, torsk, kongekrabbe osv., osv.). Det bliver også herligt at bade i elvene, særlig efter Sauna? Vi ser nok en masse rensdyr, elge, brunbjørn? polarræve, ørne, ugler etc.

Jeg glæder mig til at rejse som søn og far!

Tiden, der fulgte!

REJSER i NORD med fly, bus, bil og med Hurtigruten.
Nord -Norge for femte gang (2004,-06. 09, 11 og nu september 2020).

Tromsø, Alta, Kautokeino, Karasjok, Honningsvrå, Kjøllefjord, Pasvik og Kirkenes.

Langt deroppe i Nord er alt så voldsomt. Søtunger 2m lange og 30 cm tykke, Kongekrabber 2 m. Havet er oftest flere 100 m dybt og derfra haler en ”juksemaskine” store torsk op. 6 stk. på linen, når den og dens blylod kommer op. 

På markeder i Sao Paulo, Brasilien, ses i fastemåned meterlange BERGEN fiskekasser fulde af tykke, tørrede torsk til ”Kabliau”.

Den smukke Alta-skifer, kendt fra bankers facadebeklædninger, står skråt flere 100 km førend Ural, som engang bremsede Jordens skorpe op.

Midt på sommeren jages rensdyr af myggesværme op på bare klipper mod nord, hvor birkeskovene er ophørt at gro. Om vinteren er der mange måneder med ”mørketid”. Børn opdager det ikke, men voksne bliver deprimerede!

Highway 888, Europas nordligste hovedvej kræver kortegekørsel, når ikke slet og ret lukket med bomme pgra sne. Alle vores fem ture er i for- eller eftersommer.

Efterfølgende program er fra ”as time goes by!” eller også fra ”tiden, der fulgte!” min 80 års RWT-rejse, lige førend CORONA. Nu er jeg 81 år.

Min dejlige 48-årig søn, Christian, vil sætte tid til side for at ledsage på femte rejse. (Tromsø til Kirkenes & Pasvikdalen mod Rusland). Vores gamle fiskervenner fra første 2004 tur til Kerstin, dengang ung læge på Sørøya, er blevet adviseret om vores komme og dørene er gæstfrit åbne.

Christian var i mange år ”Captain” på Hideaway, vores dejlige Grinde, når han, Marie, Kerstin og skolekammerater sejlede fire ugers ture i Skærgårdene, sommer efter sommer. Han sætter nu tid af til mig!

En rig New York børsmægler planlagde engang en vandretur fra Alaska til Ildlandet i Syd med sine fire store børn. Depoter med alt muligt (både til at krydse floder etc.) blev lagt ud. Da de fem foer vild i Rockies Mountains valgte et familieråd, at storebror Steve ville være bedst til at føre gruppen ned?

De drog ud som 1 + 4, kom hjem til mor i NY som fem ”venner for Livet.

Spejder Sport’s forårskatalog med to sider fra min hånd: ”Rejs bare, det skal nok gå!”, udkom 2 timer førend CORONA lukkede Danmark ned en lørdag i marts kl. 12.

Jeg vil efter 8 x 10 år fra fattigdom til Nu ikke med ind i FREMTIDEN. Havde allerede før 80 års rejsen dannet en mening om store, fremtidige Disruptions.

Nu har en sådan mening vokset sig anderledes og større. De fleste af Jordens 217? lande vil blive omstruktureret. Målene herfor må være, at så mange som muligt lever på et så højt niveau, som vel muligt.

Vores danske omstrukturering fra feudalisme til nu har taget 1.000 – 1500 år.

The quiet childhood

Being born in the midst of five children, a little old-fashioned, may not cause special tensions to develop, for example as a result of jealousy. Moreover, when I was born into WWII with all the constraints, narrow-neck, poverty, rationalization, blackout, etc., from the outside, we were hardly “curling children” in the sense that we toppled ourselves in possibilities, those maybe? The most loving toy in winter was the large, worn-out wooden box with building blocks. The LEGO of the time.

The game was LUDO. Later came Tekno, which appealed to become an engineer. Out we played in the sandbox or plowed courtyard with a tablespoon. Skipping rope, a scooter with stick, swing and ball game up the wall. Summer evening, drift ball 500 m could be played to each side on Rugårds Highway. Where, partly because of the fact that there is a lack of transparency, it’s not The war, but also because the car was not usually privately owned (a tough, cigarette-smoking lady, Marie, drove Caper’s driving) was not traffic at the end of the day.

You always gathering in winter in the kitchen. Here there was heat from Stove. Bricks were put in the oven and then packed in newspaper taken to bed. Heat canisters are filled with hot water for the same purpose.

Early on, we learned to participate in the “farm” feed animals, work with vegetables, sew tobacco leaves on a leash, and hang the bundles across in drying houses. Lock chickens against the Fox in the evening. Horses had to be watered and cow’s grazing moved. They also had to go home to milk and be inside for the night.

Throughout childhood, the character changed with more and more orchard. From the marshes had to be laid out iron pipes for strawberry watering, then the watering itself had to be cared for.

Strawberries had to be picked from very early mornings. Then came berry harvesting (currants, blackcurrants, gooseberries), then plums, and finally pears and apples. In the autumn and during the winter, branches were dragged together after pruning. Apples stored in a well-built fruit house had to be kept frost-free using kerosene stove. For replanting, it became fun to learn to graft, as well as possibly. hedgehog grafting, where whole trees were converted into new ones a single season. In general, for the whole of childhood, we children were an asset. Home from school, to dress for help. Hang on the little grey “Ferguson”, long before both legs could simultaneously reach both pedals (clutch and brake). Yes, there were accidents in agriculture back then. A load of peat from Jutland arrived every now and then. Illegally, grain was driven to be milled in the dark of night.
The childhood home has a workshop with good hand tools. Many a fine Christmas present was made here. Otherwise, it was the local blacksmith who helped with all the repair. The childhood years were marked by harsh winters (1942/43 and 1947), so there was a lot of skating, but also snow shoveling in groups?

How we got clothes on the body is not remembered, but there came a sowing lady, Gudrun, a few days now and then. As many children remember childhood in the countryside back then, it was a long series of good warm summers and fine winters. Everything was just nature. Sunsets with church bells ringing were lovely.

In an as yet unpolluted or regulated nature, a fresh boy could collect bird eggs, fish, bath in creek swings, etc. Over long summers, 2×11 km bicycled to Varbjerg to swim almost every night.
As in settler countries, which are most concerned with Australia, poverty did not open up to thinking about relationships between women and men. There was just hard work and the woman was a “breeding animal” who provided labor.

During a five-hour drive in Vietnam from my work in HaLong Bay to Hanoi over various rivers with french lady Francesse, I asked her about life in the beautiful Banana High here and there in extensive rice paddies? She just laughed at me: -dear Svend, it’s hard work from early morning to late at night. No room for “love”.

Both my and Hanne’s grandmothers both ended up in “madhouses”, probably because of the fact that they were noting a position to do so. Sexual difficulties were male/female. As a young person, my own grandmother had not to have the one she loved. Jeppe Åkær’s “hose-critter” in mind.

Every year, my mother looked forward to the week when my father was cycling in his FDF scout work. Then she enjoyed her time in the sun lounger with her Samojdespids dog, King. For Denmark, my childhood was the beginning of a great break-up. 53% had been released from farm/ agriculture. Later, this figure should fall to today’s 3%. Everything had been rationed, during WWII even marked by many surrogates. But then “came a boat with bananas” again! Some even got a “dollar convertible car” to drive in. (officially from “rich uncle in Amerika”).

Parental Responsibility
Believers or not, I do believe that all children have the right to pray and have evening prayers? It doesn’t do much damage and then you’ve covered the Bible’s Ten Commandments or the SevenWorld Commandments.

The prayer sounded as follows:

I am tired and go to bed,
closes my eyes two.
Father see in love,
To my little rest down.
Have today I dear God,
Sinned against your commandments,
Be gracious to me, be good to me.
Erase it for Jesus’s blood.

To threaten to be put to bed if you’re naughty is a misunderstanding. The bed should be a nice place!
A certain good DK book: The rural woman describes hard toil, which all sorts of inventions after the “war” have worked to mitigate. Kosan gas, Tasso mixer, Ferm washing machine, Gram refrigeration and freezer machines, local freezers houses, etc. appeared. Out came Ferguson tractor, Dronningborg combines harvester, milking machines, etc. to so the concept of two farm laborers also disappeared.

Denmark, like other Nordic countries, was exposed to large-scale emigration to NEW countries by “unfit” young people or simply as a result of potato failure (Ireland). In the settler countries, the woman’s lot was even harder. Just think of the phrase: How the West was won! Life itself could be at stake. My maternal parents were a trip “in Alaska to dig Gold”. Must have sailed through New York and coming ashore on Ellis Island?

A half-uncle stood 100 years ago on the quay in Aalborg, awaiting the first ship to Brazil or Australia. It was Brazil, where we then have relations with the strong national associations, that were created there by the first generation. Our family speaks Danish yet in the third generation.

Migration to Great Australia was particularly tough, due to geography and climate. Subsequently, life as a settler in inner Australia mentions. Tasmania was opened up from well over 1820 and the very “mainland” the large island the size of America, 4,000 x 4,000 km a little later from 1840. The book: The Birth of Australia (ISBN 0 72700972 9) describes in the chapter: “On The Land”, The Peasant Family From:

The Birth Of Australia:
Since the farmer could rarely afford to hire laborers, he relied on breeding a large family to relieve his physical burdens. To the wife’s other problems, therefore, must be added the fact that she was practically always pregnant or nursing new babies, often in filthy conditions which meant that half of them died and the effort had been wasted to that extent.

Breeding of farm animals out more efficiently than that. Nevertheless, some very large families survived. In the healthier climate of the Darling Downs, for instance, Six selectors could boast of seventy-six living children between them, an average of thirteen per family. Some exceptional mothers in the area bore eighteen living children. Children were put to work from the earliest possible age, collecting firewood, gathering eggs, minding new babies, driving stock to water, breaking up clods left after harrowing the fields, sowing seed, acting as scarecrows, picking up mail, digging the garden, and so on. Every selector’s child had to take his turn at milking: to be kicked out of bed at four in the morning to milk cows, and to be kicked right through the day till nine or ten o´clock at night doing this, that and everything. As the sons grew older many continued to toil on without wages, on the unwritten understanding that one day they could inherit the farm. If the property was not an expanding one, which was the usual story, younger sons could only look forward to joining the itinerant labor force or going to work in town or city. This pattern continued well into the present century: in 1946 more than 80 percent of wheat farmers were the sons of wheat farmers. Only half had been paid any wages during their life, and even these received only a few shillings “pocket money” on reaching their twenties…..

Den stille barndom

At blive født som den midterste af fem børn, der lidt gammeldags facon er godt spredt, kan måske medføre, at der ikke udvikler sig specielle spændinger f. eks som følge af jalousi. Når så jeg
ydermere blev født ind i WWII med alle de begrænsninger, smalhals, fattigdom, rationalisering, mørklægning osv., udefra, var vi næppe ”curlingbørn” i den forstand, at vi væltede os i muligheder, tværtom måske? Kærligste legetøj om vinteren var den store, slidte trækasse med byggeklodser. Den tids LEGO.

Spil var LUDO. Senere kom Tekno, som appellerede til at blive ingeniør. Ude legede vi i sandkasse eller pløjede gårdsplads med en spiseske. Sjippetov, løbehjul med kæp, gynge og boldspil op ad væg. Sommeraften kunne der spilles drivbold 500 m til hver side på Rugårds Landevej. Hvor der, dels pga. Krigen, men også fordi bilen ikke var normalt eje (en skrap, cigaretrygende dame, Marie, kørte Kaperkørsel) ikke var trafik sidst på dagene.

Man samledes altid om vinteren i køkkenet. Her var der varme fra Komfur. Mursten blev lagt i ovn og så pakket i avis taget med i seng. Varmedunke fyldtes med varm vand til samme formål. Tidligt lærte vi at deltage i ”bedriften”, fodre dyr, arbejde med grøntsager, sy tobaksblade på snor og hænge bundterne op på tværs i tørrehuse. Lukke høns inde for Ræven om aftenen. Heste skulle vandes og køers græsning flyttes. De skulle også hjem at malkes og være inde for natten. Hele barndommen skiftede karakter med mere og mere frugtplantage. Fra moserne skulle lægges jernrør ud til jordbærvanding, så skulle selve vandingen passes. Der skulle plukkes jordbær fra meget tidlig morgen. Så kom bærhøst (ribs, solbær, stikkelsbær), så blommer og til sidst pærer og æbler. I efteråret og hen over vinteren blev der slæbt grene sammen efter beskæring. Æbler opbevaret i velbygget frugthus skulle holdes frostfri vhja. petroleumskamin. Til nyplantning blev det blev det sjovt at lære podning, okulering samt evt. pindsvinepodning, hvor man på en enkelt sæson ombyggede et helt træ til ny bæring.

Generelt gjaldt for hele barndommen, at vi børn var et asset. Hjem fra skole, at klæde om til hjælp. Hænge på den lille grå ¨Ferguson”, længe inden man med begge ben samtidigt kunne nå begge pedaler (kobling og bremse). Ja, der skete ulykker i landbruget dengang. Et læs tørv fra Jylland ankom nu og da. Illegalt blev korn kørt til maling i nattens mulm og mørke.

Barndomshjemmet have et huggehus med godt håndværktøj. Her blev lavet mangen en fin julegave. Ellers var det lokal smed, der hjalp med al reparation. Barndomsårene var præget af strenge vintre (1942/43 og 1947), så der var megen skøjtning, men også sneskovling i snelag. Hvordan vi fik tøj på kroppen, huskes ikke, men der kom en sydame, Gudrun, et par dage nu og da. Som vel rigtig mange børn opfattede barndom på landet dengang, var det en lang række af gode somre og fine vintre. Alt indimellem var jo blot natur. Solnedgange med kirkeklokker var dejlige.

I en endnu ikke forurenet eller reguleret natur, kunne en frisk dreng samle fugleæg, fiske, bade i åsving osv. Hen over lange somre blev der cyklet 2 x 11 km til Varbjerg for at svømme næsten hver aften. Som i nybyggerlande, her tænkes mest på Australien, åbnede fattigdom slet ikke op for at tænke på relation kvinde/mand imellem. Der var bare hårdt arbejde, og kvinden var et ”avlsdyr”, der sørgede for arbejdskraft. Under en fem timers kørsel i Vietnam fra mit arbejde i HaLong Bay til Hanoi over diverse floder med Francesse spurgte jeg hende om Livet i de smukke bananhøje hist og her i udstrakte rismarker? Hun bare lo af mig: -kære Svend, det er hårdt arbejde fra tidlig morgen til sen aften. Ingen plads til ”love”.

Såvel min som Hannes farmødre endte begge på ”galeanstalter”, vel pga. seksuelle vanskeligheder mand/kvinde. Min egen farmor havde som ung ikke måttet få den, hun elskede. Jeppe Åkærs ”hosekræmmeren” in mente’.

Min mor så hvert år frem til den uge, hvor min far var på cykeltur i sit FDF-arbejde. Så nød hun tiden i liggestol med sin Samojdespidshund, King. Min barndom var for Danmark starten af en stor opbrudstid. 53% havde fået dagligt udkomme i landbruget. Senere skulle dette tal falde til 3 %. Alt havde været rationeret, under WWII endda også
præget af mange surrogater. Men så ”kom der en båd med bananer” igen! Nogle fik endog ”Dollargrin” at køre i.

Forældreanvar:
Troende eller ej, mener jeg, at alle børn har ret til at bede og få bedt aftenbøn? Det gør ikke stor skade og så har man dækket Biblens ti bud eller etikkens syv Verdensgældende (Commandments). I min slægt lød

At true med, at blive lagt i seng, hvis man er uartig, er en misforståelse. Sengen bør være et dejligt sted!
En vist nok god bog: Landbokvinden beskriver hårdt slid, som alle mulige opfindelser efter ”krigen” har arbejdet på at mildne. Kosangas, Tasso røremaskine, Ferm vaskemaskine, Gram køle- og frysemaskiner, lokale frysehuse, osv dukkede op. Det var da også helt nødvendigt, da begrebet kokke- stuepige forsvandt. Ude kom Ferguson traktor, Dronningborg mejetærsker, malkeanlæg etc.
til så begrebet to karle også forsvandt. Danmark var som andre Nordiske lande først i århundredet udsat for stor emigration til NYE
lande af ”utilpassede” unge eller blot som følge af svigt i kartofler (Irland). I nybyggerlandene var kvindens lod endnu hårdere. Tænk blot på udtrykket: How the West was won! Livet selv kunne være på spil. Mine mor-forældre var en tur “i Alaska at grave Guld”. Må så have sejlet via New York og kommet i land på Ellis Island?

En halvonkel stod for 100 år siden på kajen i Aalborg, og afventede første skib til Brasilien eller Australien. Det blev Brasilien, hvor vi så har relationer til de stærke nationale foreninger, der skabtes der af første generation. Vores slægt taler dansk endnu i tredje generation.

Fra fødslen af Australien:
Da landmand sjældent havde råd til at ansætte arbejdere, satsede han på avl af en stor familie at lindre hans fysiske byrder. Til hustruens øvrige problemer skal derfor tilføjes det faktum, at hun var næsten altid gravid eller ammende nye babyer, ofte i beskidte forhold, hvilket betød, at halvdelen af dem døde og indsatsen var på denne måde blevet spildt. Opdræt af husdyr blev udført mere effektivt end det. Ikke desto mindre overlevede nogle meget store families. I det sundere Darling Downs klima, kunne f.eks. seks nybyggere prale af 76 levende børn mellem dem, et gennemsnit af tretten per familie. Nogle ekstraordinære mødre i området fødte atten levende børn.

Børn blev sat til at arbejde tidligst mulige alder, samle brænde, samle æg, passe nye babyer, drive kvæg til vands, brække klumper op tilbage efter harvning af marker, så frø, agere som fugleskræmsel, afhente post, grave haven, og så videre. Hver nybyggers barn var nødt til at tage sin tur med malkning: blive smidt ud af sengen kl. fire om morgenen for at malke køer, og at blive sparket dagen igennem indtil kl. ni og ti om natten med at gøre dette, et og alt.

Efterhånden som sønnerne blev ældre, fortsatte mange med at gå videre uden løn, på grund af den uskrevne forståelse af, at de en dag kunne arve gården. Hvis ejendommen ikke var en ekspanderende en, som var den sædvanlige historie, kunne yngre sønner kunne kun se frem til at slutte sig til omrejsende arbejdsstyrke eller tage arbejde i en by (som i Danmark?). Dette mønster fortsatte godt ind i det nuværende århundrede: i 1946 var mere end 80 procent af hvede landmænd således sønner af hvede landmænd. Kun halvdelen var blevet betalt nogen løn i løbet af deres liv, og selv disse modtog kun et par shillings “ommepenge” langt op i tyveårsalder.

Not many 80-year-olds embark on solo earth journeys. But for Svend Aage Bang Nielsen from Copenhagen, the journey around the globe was a necessity to get on in life. Meet the globetrotter who, with his recognizable red cap and resilience, still travels the world thin and has clear positions on how we can both travel and save the climate.

It was probably in the cards that young Svend Aage from Funen would quickly get to experience places in a world that most Danes only know from books or the news. As a young engineer, he was quickly stationed in countries such as Iraq, North Korea and Samoa, where he helped to manage the construction of waterworks and cement factories. He now needed to be blown through.

For more than 50 years, Svend Aage’s wife, Hanne, was his regular companion and travel companion. But when she died, something new had to happen and quickly Svend Aage’s earth journey became a reality. “I was incredibly sad and it all had to be blown away. You could say that I needed to re-invent myself and my new AloneLife”, he explains from the Østerbro apartment, which is filled with books, maps, and plans for new trips. The southern hemisphere of the Earth has always formed the framework for most of Svend Aage’s travel life, and therefore it was natural that he laid out a route focusing on the places that matter most.

“In many of the countries I visited on the trip, I have friends, who were to be visited. Therefore, it occurred to me naturally to spend 8 weeks travelling the World over Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and South America. Traveled circularly for the sake of the Planet”.

Svend Aage’s background as a figure-focused engineer does not deny itself when it comes to ideas about how an active and rich travel life can be reconciled with our shared commitment to better look after climate and the environment. “We don’t have to stop travelling far away. But instead, we should start travelling less and ditch the star-shaped travel pattern, where we take many short trips out of Denmark” according to the travel enthusiast.

“Travel has to be appropriate for the planet and they will only be so, if we move circularly on longer trips and, for example, in the future,” he said, “travel only every three or four years”. The backpack (rucksack) is a gift”. The best gift you can give a young person is a backpack. With it, he or she can go out into the world and be built up as a human being.” And to all worried parents who wonder if it is now dangerous, Svend Aage says “that it’s going to be all right. Most situations can be met with a smile or killer gaze”.

Svend Aage, as his wife, Hanne (together, but often seconded separately) has experienced many of the World’s 197 countries. Everywhere there are people who want to help and show off their part of the world.

Det er ikke mange 80-årige, som kaster sig ud i solo-jordomrejser. Men for Svend Aage Bang Nielsen fra København, var rejsen rundt om kloden en nødvendighed for at komme videre i livet. Mød globetrotteren, der med sin genkendelige, røde kasket og ukuelighed stadig rejser verden tynd og har klare holdninger til, hvordan vi både kan rejse og redde klimaet.

Det lå nok i kortene, at unge Svend Aage fra Fyn hurtigt ville komme til at opleve steder i verden, de fleste danskere kun kender fra bøger eller nyhederne. Som ung ingeniør blev han nemlig hurtigt udstationeret i lande som Irak, Nordkorea og Samoa, hvor han var med til at styre opførelsen af vandværker og cementfabrikker. Trængte til at blive blæst igennem.

I mere end 50 år var Svend Aages kone, Hanne hans faste følgesvend og rejsemakker. Men da hun døde, skulle der ske noget nyt og hurtigt blev Svend Aages jordomrejse en realitet. ”Jeg var utrolig ked af det og det hele skulle blæses væk. Man kan sige, at jeg trængte til at genopfinde mig selv og mit nye alene-liv”, forklarer han fra Østerbro-lejligheden, som er fyldt med bøger, kort og planer om nye rejser. Den sydlige halvkugle af Jorden har altid dannet rammen om det meste af Svend Aages rejseliv og derfor var det naturligt, at han lagde en rute med fokus på de steder, der betyder mest. ”I mange af de lande, jeg besøgte på turen, har jeg venner som skulle besøges. Derfor faldt det mig naturligt at bruge 12 uger på at rejse jorden rundt over Thailand, Australien, New Zealand og Sydamerika. Rejs cirkulært for planetens skyld”

Svend Aages baggrund som talfokuseret ingeniør fornægter sig ikke, når det gælder tanker om, hvordan et aktivt og rigt rejseliv kan forenes med vores fælles forpligtelse om at passe bedre på klima og miljø. ”Vi behøver ikke at holde op med at rejse langt væk. Men i stedet skal vi begynde at rejse mindre og droppe det stjerneformede rejsemønster, hvor vi tager mange korte ture ud fra Danmark”, mener rejseentusiasten.

”Rejser skal være hensigtsmæssige for kloden og det bliver de kun, hvis vi bevæger os cirkulært på længere ture og f.eks. kun rejser hvert tredje eller fjerde år”. Rygsækken er en gave ”Den bedste gave, du kan give et ungt menneske, er en rygsæk. Med den kan han eller hun nemlig drage ud i verden og blive bygget op som menneske”. Og til alle bekymrede forældre der spekulerer, om det nu er farligt, siger Svend Aage ”at det nok skal gå. De fleste situationer kan klares med et smil eller dræberblik”.

Svend Aage har som sin hustru, Hanne (sammen men ofte udstationeret hver for sig) oplevet mange af Verdens 197 lande. Overalt findes der fremmede mennesker, der vil hjælpe og vise deres del af Verden frem.
